Xolo, a German Berlin based bioprinting company, has launched the Xell bioprinter—a budget-friendly option for volumetric bioprinting. Starting at €20,000, the Xell is priced competitively to democratize access to the novel approach of bioprinting. Additionally, Xolo offers a 50% discount to academic institutions, aiming to empower research facilities with a cutting-edge tool for generating complex biomedical structures without the high cost typically associated with volumetric bioprinting.
The Xell bioprinter employs Xolography technology, creating isotropic, layer-free structures that maintain a smooth, uniform finish. Equipped with full HD resolution and a powerful LED light sheet, the Xell can produce intricate surface details with impressive precision. The printer’s build chamber, optimized for standardized disposable cuvettes, supports a print volume of 10 x 17 x 10 mm, ideal for high-value bio-inks used in tissue scaffolds or custom hydrogels.
Ease of use is another key advantage of the Xell. Pre-loaded with Xolo’s Bio-Inks, the Xell offers an intuitive interface, enabling researchers to quickly start printing. Designed as an open platform, the Xell also allows users to experiment with custom materials. For labs needing larger print volumes or variable print settings, Xolo’s Xube² model offers modular adaptability, including options for multiple resolutions, materials, and light sources (375 nm and 405 nm).
It remains to be seen how this will perform on the field, yet it is an exciting avenue for those interested in accessing volumetric bioprinting without the know how of how to put one together, which certainty isn’t trivial.
